Opening March 6, the Tinney Contemporary gallery will feature new works by Lyle Carbajal that carry forward time-honored themes of his past work. Using original materials, vivid color, bold line, and found wood as his canvas, Carbajal explores the difficult transitions from youthful naiveté to the clumsiness of maturation. In a primitive style reminiscent of Jean Dubuffet’s Art Brut, Carbajal depicts extreme emotional states where mask faces are wild-eyed and gripped with anger, terror, confusion or pain. Carbajal cites his everyday childhood memories of monsters and machines as inspiration, and growing up in Latin America for his unconventional ideas.
Lyle Carbajal holds a degree in design yet is self-taught as a painter. His work has been exhibited in galleries around the world, such as Museu de Estremoz in Portugal, the Caro d’Offay Gallery in Chicago, and Art Fair in Denmark. His work can be found in many private and corporate collections. The Tinney Contemporary exhibit will run through March 27. Opening Reception March 6, 6–9 p.m.`
