Visiting Faces: An Exhibit of German Carte Des Vistes and Cabinet Cards

CLARKSVILLE, TN – The original 1898 building of the Customs House Museum showcases the exhibit Visiting Faces through October 31st. This collection of T. Max Hochstetler features portraits of German royals, actors, singers, composers, musicians, and directors. Max states, “One afternoon I wandered into a small antique shop in the little village of Dornach, Switzerland. Scattered atop a table was a large group of photographs. Among the cabinet card photographs were portraits of a woman wearing many different theatrical costumes. The cabinet card photographers were E. Bieber and J. C. Schaarwächter and many had embossed dates.”

Both photographers ran highly successful businesses, which catered to the elite of society in Germany.              E. Bieber, a portrait atelier, founded in Hamburg by Emilie Bieber (1810-1884), in 1852. Her nephew, Leonard Bieber and his son, continued to operate the businesses in Hamburg and Berlin W. for more than eighty years.    Julius C. Schaarwächter’s (1821-1905) atelier first established business in 1852, making portraits and selling photography chemicals and paper.  In 1877, Schaarwächter moved his business to West Berlin where he gained fame and wealth.

The carte de visite photograph proved to be a very popular item during the American Civil War. Soldiers, friends and family members would have a means of inexpensively obtaining photographs and sending them to loved ones in small envelopes. Each photograph was the size of a visiting card, and such photograph cards became enormously popular and were traded among friends and visitors. The immense popularity of these card photographs led to the publication and collection of photographs of prominent persons. “Card mania” spread throughout Europe and then quickly to America.

The Customs House Museum is the second largest general museum in Tennessee. Visitors will find an array of exhibits throughout its galleries in addition to the model trains and Explorers’ Floor interactive children’s area. The Customs House Museum is located at the corner of Second and Commerce Streets. Regular museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7, Sr. Citizens and College ID $5, Ages 6 to 18 $3, and under six is free. For more information on the above exhibit contact Terri Jordan, Exhibits Curator, at 931-648-5780 or terri@customshousemuseum.org.

If you are a teacher or school. . .e-mail us to host a residency in your classroom. Many of you have expressed interest over the course of last year after our registration window closed. Grant funded residencies are available only for a short period for 2010-11 as we head into the Fall.

If you are a parent. . . please note that we are raising more than poets. We are developing thinkers, communicators, and leaders who will have access to an expanding pool of college and professional opportunities.

Summer Programs ’10Thank you to our summer program partners Bridge Program of the YMCA, Monroe Harding, Franklin Housing Authority and the Humanities Tennessee Young Writers Workshop for hosting workshops and slams this summer.

Poets in Los AngelesTennessee had its best outing yet at the Brave New Voices Festival.  The team took 1st place in the morning quarterfinal bout which was enough to propel us into the semifinals for the first time ever. We should have videos up for viewing by next month’s e-mail. A special thanks to Logik who spent many hours of his summer coaching the team to readiness.  We also appreciate Tia Mitchell and Crystal Jones for their support. And. . . Rhea Carmon and Black Sunshine Arts & Entertaiment were kind enough to introduce us to poet Taria Person who played a key role on the team.

P-O-E-T-H-O-NBy sending 6 youth poets to Los Angeles this summer, we did more than send 6 youth poets to Los Angeles this summer.  We began building an aspirational artistic path for all young Tennessee writers which will drive literacy, intrinsic motivation, critical thinking, and positive community conversation and action. Help us reach our P-O-E-T-H-O-N goal by covering  a portion of the last $215 needed.   In Peace and Poetry,Youth Speaks Nashville

Ripple Effect

OPENING RECEPTION: Sat, August 21, 6 to 9p
THROUGH Oct 2

Since July 5, French artist Corinne Spielewoy has been working in collaboration with 25 local artists to create a collection of interconnected pieces of art – in which one anchor piece of art has a gradually spreading influence on all of the others. In preparation for the opening of the exhibit, each artist was given three days to create a piece in response to the previous piece. The culmination of this cooperative effort will be featured in Ripple Effectwith a variety of media represented, including dance,
video, sculpture, and painting.

Inspired by the idea that it is vital for humans to be aware
of our connection to each other, Spielewoy’s goal is to bring
meaning back into human relationships through art projects
that encourage direct human contact. For more information

Refaat Zakhary exhibit | TN Art League

Retired New York Architect exhibits at the Tennessee Art League

Nashville, TN – Loving art from an early age, Refaat Zakhary spent a great deal of his free time as a teenager drawing and painting. When the time came for college, it was clear to him that architectural school was the right choice. After obtaining his degree from the Cairo Faculty of Fine Art, he spent 15 years working with European firms that specialized in hotel design. In 1980 Refaat joined a prominent architectural and interior design firm in New York City where he rose to the position of partner. Now retired, he lives in Nashville spending his time doing what he loves to do most: creating art.

During the months of September and October, Zakhary’s detailed paintings can be viewed at the Tennessee Art League. Refaat says of his work, “The difference between flat canvas and true artwork are the shades and shadows; solids and voids; darks and lights; depths and shallows; lines and curves; black & white and colors; and all the values in between. But what makes someone fall in love with a piece of art – is when a particular piece touches something inside them. For me, it’s a memory, a color, nature’s beauty, man’s creation, movement, elegance… I’m inspired by it all. The world is my muse.”

Founded by a group of Middle Tennessee artists in 1954, and later chartered as a 501©(3) nonprofit educational institution, the Tennessee Art League (TAL) has enriched the lives of thousands of artists and the community as a cultural center, educational facility and art gallery for over fifty years. In 1965, the league started the annual Central South Art Exhibition (one of the oldest art competitions in the South). In 2005, TAL moved to its present home at 808 Broadway, in the heart of the historical and cultural corridor of Nashville. This new home provides more gallery, workshop, and classroom space, as well as a gallery store. Currently the TAL provides exhibition and meeting space to schools and community groups, as well as an exhibiting outlet for at-risk groups.

Meet the artist at TAL’s opening reception on September 4th, as part of Nashville’s art crawl. Hours are 6 to 9 pm. The Tennessee Art League is located at 808 Broadway, and is open Tuesday through Saturday.
